Methodology
We pulled all of the data from 15 threads, including the R/AskSf, R/SanFrancisco, R/ExecutiveAssistants, and more subreddits. We separated the data by specific activity, category of activity, and how positive or negative a sentiment the user expressed about the activity. We ended up with 323 suggestions across 7 major categories, which we’ll explore below.
There are two obvious limitations to this report: first, we only analyzed 15 threads, so keep in mind that this sample size is on the small side. The second limitation is that positive or negative sentiment is ultimately a subjective measurement.

The Top 10 Most Recommended Team Activities in SF
To find the top team-building activities overall, we tallied the specific mentions of each recommended activity in the threads we analyzed (across all categories). This list of 10 represents the most mentioned activities with highly positive sentiment.
1. Escape Room – 28 Mentions
Coming in 1st with 28 mentions is Escape Rooms! This activity is part problem-solving, part puzzles, and full of interactive elements, which are all factors of a quality team building activity. Plus, they’re super fun and feature a wide range of themes and venues. There were 15 recommendations across all threads for the escape rooms at Palace Games in particular.
Mini Golf tied for 2nd with 17 mentions. Users highlighted the “fun” factor for being why they recommend it for team-building. There were 8 specific recs for Stagecoach Greens and 6 specific recs for Urban Putt. Stagecoach Greens fans remarked that they preferred the more spacious layout, great set pieces, and proximity to food trucks. Urban Putt fans highlighted the creative cocktail and food menu as a big plus, and noted that it’s best for small groups.
Boating/Sailing tied with Mini Golf for 2nd, also receiving 17 mentions. This is a team building activity that feels luxurious and is perfect for commemorating a particularly fruitful year. 9 mentions specifically recommend sailing on the San Francisco Bay. Which we second, because it’s always a good idea to take advantage of the natural resources of the city you’re doing your team building in when planning the activity.
Volunteering came in 4th place with 16 mentions. Giving back to the community is a great way to connect as a team and reflect on what you have to be grateful for. Some places to volunteer in SF that received multiple shout-outs were Glide Memorial, Meals on Wheels, and Project Open Hand.
Bowling came in 5th place with 13 mentions. Much like mini-golf, Redditors emphasize the “fun” factor. Another upside is that the structure of bowling allows for downtime in between each round, where you can chat, snack, and drink with your coworkers. Mission Bowling specifically accrued 5 recommendations, and Lucky Strike was close behind with 4 recs.
Scavenger Hunts came in 6th with 13 mentions. Scavenger Hunts are great for team building because they’re super customizable, get your team to see the city from a new perspective, and are a great pick for a team on a tight budget. 5 mentions recommend taking the DIY path to tailor it to your team, while 2 others shout out The Go Game.
Food and Drink Tours came in 7th with 11 mentions. We offer phenomenal SF Walking Food Tours in the Mission District, North Beach, and Chinatown, which are excellent team building activities. Many Redditors shout out their positive experiences going on winery tours and offsite excursions to Napa Valley and Sonoma. So if a trip to wine country is in your team’s budget, we’re pretty certain you’ll be receiving rave reviews for your event planning!
A trip to the Exploratorium came in 8th with 11 mentions. The Exploratorium is a museum with interactive exhibits that are utterly unique and captivating. Specifically, the Exploratorium After Dark Experience (Thursday nights only) was shouted out 5 times across threads because it’s adults only, and there are drinks for sale you can enjoy as you peruse exhibits.
Tied for the last spot in our top 10 with 7 mentions was Graffiti Wall Painting (not the illegal kind.) 1AM SF has a popular team building workshop that was shouted out in all 7 mentions. In this workshop, an instructor teaches your team how to spray paint, and you can choose to learn how to create your own tag, make a piece of art, or collaborate as a group on a mural.
In a tie for our last spot is Pottery, with 7 total mentions. Doing a creative workshop is a popular team-building choice because your team gets to learn a new skill, use their imagination, and naturally bond over a unique shared experience. Clay by the Bay received 3 shoutouts a a favorite spot for pottery-centric team building activities.
We evaluated the worst team building activities in SF by totalling the specific mentions in each thread of every recommended activity (across categories) where negative sentiment was expressed in the comment. We were looking for phrases like “recommend against”, “don’t do”, or “bad time”.
Trust falls: No grown adult wants to fall back off a desk into the arms of their coworkers. Redditors agree this activity belongs in middle school gym classes, and not in adult workplaces.
Ice breaker games: If your team is well-established, ice-breaker games can feel like a cringey or lazy activity. Redditors agree that ice-breakers don’t encourage genuine connection, but rather leave teams feeling infantilized or misunderstood.
Arcades: You might think that because you and your friends enjoy arcades, they’d be a good pick for your team’s activity. Going to the arcade actually fails to address essential aspects of team building. Redditors posit that arcades separate team members instead of bringing them together, so no real bonding can happen.
Food with no activities: Activities where there was nothing to do after a meal was served received negative sentiment across all threads, because traditional dinners are boring! We here at Avital have been saying that for years, and it turns out Redditors agree. That’s why we invented the SF interactive Meal, to be your activity and meal all in one.
What This Means for SF Team Building Organizers
After analyzing the data from 15 Reddit threads on San Francisco Team Building activities, as well as hosting 5-star team building events in SF for 15 years, here are our top conclusions and tips for team building organizers.
You’re never too old to enjoy a fun game: Games & Entertainment was the most popular category with 112 mentions (34.7% of all mentions). Escape Rooms, Mini Golf, Bowling, and Scavenger Hunts received the most specific mentions, but we also saw Ping Pong, Roller Skating, and Pinball get some love in the threads.
People love to learn new things, especially if they’re creative in nature: Creative Workshops received 41 mentions and (12.7% of all mentions). Pottery and Graffiti Wall Painting placed in our top 10 activities, and odds are, most of your team members have no experience in either of those art forms. Experiencing something new bonds people together, and team building activities that stimulate the imagination provide stress relief and enhance positivity in the workplace. We also saw improv classes, glass blowing, and paint & sip classes receive some shout-outs across the threads if you’re looking for more activities in this realm.
Interactive elements are a must: You can take your team out to a nice restaurant or a trendy bar, but if all there is to do is admire the ambiance and complement the food, conversation may run dry sooner rather than later. Food & Drink was the 3rd most popular category across threads, so how can both these things be true? Upon further examination, the Food & Drink activities with the highest positive sentiment were walking food tours, cooking classes, and wine tasting, all events with interactive elements. Suddenly it makes sense!
No one likes forced fun: In almost every Reddit thread we analyzed, you’ll find at least one user poo-pooing the idea of team building activities in general. This is usually accompanied by a story of an incredibly dull, childish, or boring activity they once had to endure at their job. So if you’re worried about giving your team another one of those stories, we implore you to use the data on the list to ensure you pick something ACTUALLY fun! It’s that easy.
