“Did we REALLY need a new pizza spot in North Beach?” With such legendary options as Tomasso’s and Tony’s already in the neighborhood, it just seemed like overkill. But there’s always room for one more pizzeria, in my opinion – welcome to the neighborhood Il Casaro Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar!

The Place: When I walked into Il Casaro and saw a woman “manning” the pizza oven, I did a leap of joy inside. It is a rare sight and one that I was extremely happy to see. Normally, it is Salvatore DiStefano (formerly of Tony’s) but today, I was lucky enough to walk in with a lady at the helm.

The space is nice and open, although I could do without the particular club-like music playing that evening. Perhaps that is just me showing my age? Besides the music, it is a nice and casual spot with the Giants game on if you care to watch it. Sometimes, that is what you are going for and on this night in particular, it was what I was hoping for.

The Dishes: The first course we ordered was the burrata. They make it themselves along with their mozzarella and it was some of the best I have ever had. I’m sorry that I don’t have a picture of it as I ate it immediately. It was presented with some arugula drizzled in olive oil and the olives we ordered. Delicious.

Although, I did not have anything other than the burrata really stand out as exceptional, everything was very good. The quality and freshness of the ingredients was obvious. The meatballs were cooked to perfection.

There was no sediment on the bottom of the pizza which I love. I really dislike that mouthful of black dust. I know some people like it but I prefer minimal impurities. The toppings were abundant and the pizza was well balanced. There is nothing worse than a pizza with barely any cheese or sausage.

Other perks: Il Casaro also gets points for their fast and friendly service. It is a lovely addition to the neighborhood and late night options are always appreciated.

Thanks for a lovely meal, Il Casaro Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar!
